Union leaders criticize the reduction in winter fuel payments.

Trade union leaders have called the government's move to stop providing winter heating subsidies to millions of retirees the "wrong choice" and have criticized it accordingly.

 
At the TUC's annual conference in Brighton, Unite's Sharon Graham told the BBC that the government needed to be "big enough and brave enough" to own that they had made a mistake.

"We don't want to go into the winter with pensioners afraid to put the heating on."
The possibility of industrial action was brought up by PCS Union national secretary Fran Heathcote in response to government austerity.
She said: "I can see a situation where, you If they continue along the line that they're, they're heading with, with not just winter fuel payments but with social security and benefits more generally, there will be a real backlash and that could take the form of industrial action if workers, you know, because lots of unions represent low paid workers."

In his first significant interview since joining Downing Street, Sir Keir said he was keen to bring about change and make quick decisions about government expenditure on Sunday, speaking with the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg.

 
In addition, Sir Keir said that the country's financial situation necessitated the cut, accusing earlier administrations of dodging the expense of the support.
"I’m convinced that because they’ve run away from difficult decisions, we haven't got the change we need for the country," he remarked.

He declared that he was "completely convinced we will only bring about that change, and I'm determined we will, provided we take the challenging steps now." I understand that they're challenging, unpopular, and undoubtedly unpleasant decisions."

 
Although the decision made by the chancellor only applies to England and Wales, the Scottish government has also declared that it will no longer grant retirees universal access to the payout.
