Todd Boehly, a minority owner of Chelsea, wants to acquire Clearlake

 

Todd Boehly wants to buy out US private equity firm Clearlake, but he hasn't made a bid and confronts an almost difficult challenge to seize control of the club. Clearlake controls 61.5% of Chelsea and has no intention of selling any of its shares or ceding control.

Todd Boehly is keen to move on with plans to buy Chelsea despite Clearlake Capital being certain it would continue to be the club's majority owners in the long run.

Insiders close to Chelsea are shocked and alarmed that the ownership groups' now irreparable disputes have been made public.

Boehly, who has no plans to sell any of his shares, is dissatisfied with the club's management and the slow progress being made on the renovation of Stamford Bridge. Additionally, he did not want head coach Mauricio Pochettino to be fired at the conclusion of the last campaign.

After co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley put together an in-depth analysis of the season, the decision was made to replace Pochettino. Boehly and José Feliciano of Clearlake Capital have approved all significant choices made by the team.

In the last month, Boehly has received offers from several long-term investors to supply the money needed to acquire Clearlake. They think that their proposal would be so strong that Clearlake's investors would have to take it into consideration.

The co-founders of Clearlake, Eghbali and Feliciano, would decide whether to accept or reject any deal.

Even though Boehly is currently refusing to accept no, Clearlake has fully ruled out selling any of its shares.

In 2022, the Clearlake-Boehly partnership paid £2.5 billion to purchase Chelsea. Not even a sizable premium over that amount would persuade Clearlake to sell its interest.

Boehly has expressed his dissatisfaction with the current ownership structure, but other investors, like Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss, have not yet responded.

Just under 13 percent of Chelsea is owned by Boehly, Walter, and Wyss combined; this accounts for the 38.5 percent of shares that Clearlake does not possess.
