The USA swept the first round in the 15th staging of the biennial teams competition for just the third time, giving them a comfortable 5-0 lead in the fourballs ahead of Friday's foursomes.
Jim Furyk, the US captain, is off to a fantastic start in his attempt to win the title again at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada. This means Mike Weir's international squad has a big work ahead of them to turn the match around over the next three days.
Three of the five fourball matches on Thursday went to the 18th hole, with the International side left to lament a string of wasted opportunities and gilt-edged birdie putts on the back nine despite the overall one-sided scoreline.
Despite a late wobble against Jason Day and Byeong Hun An, Xander Schauffele and rookie Tony Finau—who chipped in brilliantly from the fringe at the 14th for one of the round's standout shots—were paired together in the opening match and gave the USA their first point to set the winning tone.
