As Beijing commemorates 75 years of communist China, a pair of pandas arrive in Hong Kong to receive a VIP welcome.

As part of a citywide initiative by the Chinese government to strengthen civic pride, Hong Kong threw open its red carpet on Thursday to accept two enormous pandas that were presented by the Chinese government to commemorate 75 years of Communist Party rule.

Five-year-olds An An and Ke Ke arrived at Hong Kong International Airport at approximately 11 a.m. and were welcomed with a ceremony.

However, admirers who want to see them will have to wait until December since they will be quarantined for the next 30 days and need more time to acclimate to their new home in the southern Chinese city.

They were escorted to their new residence across town at Ocean Park by elite police motorcyclists, who typically accompany visiting VIPs. There, they join four other pandas at the theme park.

An An and Ke Ke came from a breeding facility in the province of Sichuan on the Chinese mainland. Employees in Chengdu's city center mobilized as early as two in the morning to transport the pandas, which were packed in boxes with food supplies, to the airport for their 1,350-kilometer (840-mile) journey.

A line of employees said goodbye from the curb as they loaded the two onto a truck using forklifts, as seen in footage from Hong Kong's state broadcaster RTHK.

According to the theme park's Instagram page, a panda keeper from Ocean Park has been in Chengdu since July to give the bears time to get used to his voice and fragrance. Staff members have also added bamboo from southern China to the bears' diet.

At a news conference on Tuesday, the city's chief executive, John Lee, described An An, a 130-kilogram male, as "strong, nimble and clever," and Ke Ke, a 100-kilogram female, as "good at climbing, gentle and cute."

They join Le Le and Ying Ying, who were given to Hong Kong in 2007, to make the total number of pandas in the city six. Ying Ying became the oldest known first-time panda mother when she gave birth to twins in August, earning headlines.
